Mattermost alternative

A Mattermost Alternative for Companies That Would Rather Not Run the Server

Mattermost will not print a price on any of its three plans. It sells prepaid annual seats through a sales call, caps its entry plan at two hundred and fifty people, and expects you to host it yourself. Zoho Cliq is one app inside a suite, and we manage it for three hundred dollars a month per organization while your license stays in your name.

With Cascadia you get

  • Someone watching who has access
  • Channels people can actually find
  • API work where connectors stop
  • Built around how teams work
  • Your account, your history
  • User counts watched before billing bites

The short version

Why teams pick Cascadia over Mattermost

We exist for the business where sending the message is the easy part, and the hard part is that the conversation also has to reach a ticket, sit against a customer record, and still be findable two years later.

What you get here

  • Somebody designs the team and channel structure before every project quietly opens another one
  • Somebody writes down who may create a channel, who may talk to a company outside yours, and what may leave the organization that way
  • A monthly pass over members, guests, external access and connected apps, checked against who joined, who left and what got connected
  • A price you can read before you book a call, and that does not change because you crossed a seat threshold
  • The same named person on every call, who built your structure and can say why each rule exists
  • One messaging standard for the whole company, rather than the conversation living somewhere the customer record cannot see
  • No server to provision, patch, back up or upgrade, because nothing of yours is being hosted anywhere
  • Message, ticket, deal and project inside one suite rather than joined up with connectors you maintain

What ships in the standard plan here

A server somebody has to keep running, a database somebody has to back up, an upgrade window somebody has to schedule, a seat count somebody has to forecast a year ahead, and a price nobody outside the sales call can see. Everything past the license is still yours to plan and run, and here that includes the infrastructure underneath it.

  • An honest no on the first call if what you actually need is an air gapped deployment we do not sell
  • A retention and history position taken deliberately, rather than one that depends on which tier you were sold

Where owning the server stops being the interesting question

Channels designed on purpose, external access written down rather than assumed, history and retention decided before a lawyer asks, joiners and leavers handled the week they happen, and Cliq connected to Desk, CRM and Projects so the conversation reaches the record.

One figure per organization, whoever you hire next

The structure, the permissions, the external access rules, the joiner and leaver process, the Desk and CRM wiring, and up to five bots or integrations.

The number is printed, and it is monthly

Three hundred a month, published on this page, and you can stop after thirty days. No annual prepayment, no seat count to forecast twelve months out, and no call with somebody who has to check what they are allowed to offer you.

The person who designed it is the person who answers the phone

You are not explaining your structure to somebody meeting it for the first time. The Mattermost documentation is genuinely excellent and its community forum is a real asset, and we used both to write this page.

One suite, so the message is already next to the ticket

Cliq sits beside Desk, CRM, Projects and People, so a conversation becomes a ticket and a line on the customer record with nothing wired in between. Mattermost integrates broadly into engineering tooling and does it well.

Who this comparison is for

The price is a conversation, and the conversation is annual

Mattermost sells Professional and Enterprise as prepaid annual subscriptions priced on activated seats. Not monthly, and not self serve.

The entry plan stops at two hundred and fifty people

Professional carries a stated maximum of two hundred and fifty users. Past that it is not an option at any price, so growth does not raise your bill gradually, it moves you onto a different tier and a fresh quote.

Retention, legal hold and deep search sit on the higher tier

Data retention policies, legal hold, compliance export and eDiscovery are Enterprise features rather than Professional ones. So is enterprise search, which you need once the database passes three million posts.

How switching works

  1. 1

Nothing moves until we have watched how your people really talk

We sit with the people who live in chat all day and the ones who quietly route around it. What comes out is a picture of where decisions actually get made, which is rarely where the org chart says they do.

  2. 2

We count the channels, the guests and the outside companies before anything moves

The channels somebody posts in weekly, the ones opened for a project that finished two years ago, and the external conversations with clients and contractors nobody has looked at since.

  3. 3

The structure, the permissions and the retention position all get made on purpose

Who may open a channel, which are restricted and which are open, who outside the company may be invited in, and how long any of it is kept.

  4. 4

You run a full month on it, including one real project and one real departure

The first month of live messaging runs with us beside it.

Mattermost alternative questions

Straight answers about switching, pricing, and what moves with you.

See Managed Zoho Cliq
How does Mattermost compare to Slack, Microsoft Teams and Google Chat?

It is the only one of the four you can host yourself, and the only one that publishes no price at any tier. Slack sells chat on its own with a per person rate printed on the page. Microsoft Teams has a standalone plan and sells its suite both with and without Teams, so the chat can be valued. Google Chat has no price because it is bundled into Workspace and cannot be bought alone. Mattermost has three plans and quotes all three.

Can I just buy Mattermost online?

Not for production. Every tier on the pricing page routes to a person: Contact Sales for Professional, Get Pricing for Enterprise, Request Quote for Enterprise Advanced. There is a free limited use edition offered for technical evaluation, and licenses can also be bought through resellers, but there is no self service checkout for a production deployment.

What is the difference between the three Mattermost tiers?

Professional is channel based collaboration with single sign on, directory sync, guest accounts and business hours support, capped at two hundred and fifty users. Enterprise Advanced adds attribute based access control, air gapped operation, mobile hardening and scale to two hundred thousand concurrent users.

Mattermost is open source. Why would I pay you three hundred a month?

If you have the people to run it, you should not, and we give that answer regularly. You pay us when nobody on your side wants to own a server, and when somebody still has to design the channel structure, decide who may open one and who outside the company may reach in, set the retention position, provision people and remove them, wire chat into Desk and CRM, and still be doing all of it a year from now.

At what point does Mattermost stop being the cheaper answer?

We cannot compute that one, and for a different reason than on our Google Chat page. There the chat had no price because it was bundled into something else. Here it has a price and Mattermost will not publish it, so there is no per seat figure to divide our three hundred by. What can be said is that the license is the part of self hosting people estimate correctly, and the server, the upgrades and the backups are the part they do not.

Is Mattermost metered on people, messages or storage?

On people. Licenses are sold per activated seat as a prepaid annual subscription, and if you pass your seat count mid term you buy the extra seats on a quarterly true forward, prorated to your renewal date. Guests are free up to a one to one ratio with licensed seats where they sit in exactly one channel, and count as paid users once they are in more than one.

Is Mattermost a better product than Zoho Cliq?

For engineering and security operations, and for anyone who has to hold their own data, yes, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Playbooks, FIPS and STIG images, air gapped deployment and a self hosted language model are things Cliq does not do and does not try to do. Cliq wins on one thing, which is that it already sits next to Desk, CRM, Projects and People. If your requirement is sovereign infrastructure, buy Mattermost.

Does Zoho Cliq connect to the rest of Zoho?

That is the reason to choose it. Cliq sits alongside Desk, CRM, Projects and People, so a conversation becomes a ticket, a note on the customer record and a line on a report with nothing wired in between. Mattermost integrates deeply into engineering tooling, from Jira and GitHub through to GitLab and Zoom, and does it well. The difference is that those are connectors somebody maintains and ours is one suite from one vendor.

What exactly do you do for three hundred a month?

We design the channel and team structure and the naming, set the restricted and open split, write the external access rules, settle the history and retention position, provision people and remove them when they leave, configure up to five bots or integrations, connect Cliq to Zoho Desk, CRM and Projects, run the migration off whatever you are on now, and produce the monthly access reporting. Support for your team is unlimited and included. The figure covers up to a hundred users in one organization.

Who holds the Zoho Cliq license, you or us?

You do. You buy Cliq direct from Zoho and we manage it, which is how all of our Zoho work runs with one exception. Managed Zoho Assist is that exception, because there we carry the subscription ourselves. On Cliq the license, the data and the account all stay in your name, so leaving means we hand back the keys rather than move a subscription.

Can you move us off Mattermost?

Yes, and coming off a self hosted server adds a step. As well as listing the channels people actually use, the ones nobody has posted in for a year and the outside companies still holding access, we export the history off your own instance and agree what happens to the server afterward. Decommissioning it properly is part of the job, because a forgotten server holding years of conversation is a liability rather than a backup.

Is there a minimum term?

No. Three hundred a month, month to month, thirty days’ notice, and no setup fee. That is worth comparing directly against a prepaid annual seat license, because the two commitments are not the same shape. What your existing Mattermost agreement obliges you to is between you and them, and it is worth reading before assuming you can stop paying for it this quarter.

What if we are only five people?

Then use whatever you already hold and keep your three hundred dollars. Five people who all sit in one room do not have a governance problem, and that includes here. Come back when the second team starts, or when the first person leaves and nobody is sure what they could still read.

Want a chat tool somebody actually decided on?

Three hundred a month per organization covers the review, the structure design, the permissions, the migration, the integrations and the ongoing tuning, with nothing metered and nobody counted up to a hundred users. Your Zoho Cliq license stays yours.
